Federal Way Side Gigs: Check the License Rules Before Launching
Washington's business registration requirements can apply well before a side hustle becomes a full-time company

A side gig can start with one customer, but the legal and financial obligations deserve attention from the beginning.

That is especially true for people serving customers across Federal Way, SeaTac and Tukwila.

The Washington Department of Revenue lists several circumstances that require business registration.

Those include using a trade name, planning to hire employees, collecting sales tax on taxable sales or reaching specified revenue thresholds.

The department also says a business license is required when gross income is $12,000 a year or more.

Other requirements may apply even below that amount, so the threshold is not a universal exemption.

Local endorsements can create additional obligations depending on where the business operates.

Washington's licensing information specifically describes a city endorsement for businesses operating within Federal Way.

Before accepting recurring customers, define exactly what you plan to sell and where you will provide it.

Then use the state's Business Licensing Wizard to identify relevant agencies and endorsements.

Check whether the activity requires professional licensing, permits or appropriate insurance.

Keep business income and expenses organized from the first sale, even if the venture is small.

Include platform fees, supplies, travel time, refunds and taxes when setting a price.

A service that brings in cash is not necessarily profitable after all those costs are counted.

Avoid assuming that a home-based business has no local rules.

Business structure also matters: some entities must be registered with the Secretary of State before the business license application.

Write down the date each license or endorsement needs renewal.

If the rules are unclear, contact the relevant agency before paying for equipment or advertising.

A compliant, small test is usually more sustainable than an expensive launch built on assumptions.

Start with the Department of Revenue's official business-license guidance and city endorsement information.
